About
I blame my life long interest in textiles on my mother. At an early age I was introduced to sewing and knitting and then as teenager spinning and weaving entered my life.
The joy of taking a raw fleece and producing a warm beautiful, yet practical garment is one that I have enjoyed passing on to students over many years. Living where I did, in Mid Wales, with access to fleece of many colours meant that my early work was done in the many shades of black, grey, brown and cream that are the natural variation of colours in sheep. With all these colours growing naturally on the sheep there was no need to any dyeing. I used a wide range of local fleece - mainly Beulah Speckleface, Balwen, Torwen, Torddu and Jacobs.
It was illness that introduced me to the wonderful world of colour. As I could no longer spin and knit to the extent that I had been I decided to inspire others to knit and began producing Hand-dyed knitting yarns in the glorious space-dyed colours that I still use today. It was these colours that inspired my original company name, Brethyn Brith - which in English means Speckled Cloth.
From knitting yarns it was a short step to embroidery threads and then the scarves that are now my speciality. Inspiration for my colour ways have come from my family and from Wales, that beautiful country where I am fortunate enough to live and work. From the sun on the sea in Cardigan Bay to my much loved British Tortoiseshell cat, life in Wales is full of colour.
I interpret it for your enjoyment.
