Throws

My throws are all made using natural fibres – rough silk and a lambswool/alpaca mix. Using my signature dye technique and yarns I create one off and short run throws.

The silk throws, I call them ‘Bow Throws,’ are a short series of large hand-dyed silk rough silk squares which are embellished with bows of hand-dyed wool dyed the same or a complimentary colour. The soft rough silk I use for these throws means they are light enough to be worn as a shawl reminiscent of the beautiful Paisley shawls so popular in the nineteenth century as well as being used as an interior design piece.

My wool/alpaca throws are made using a beautiful fabric which has been especially spun and woven for me.

Several years ago I met a local farmer who had been a hand-loom weaver before starting farming. He rears organic lambs. I was lucky enough to be able to buy these fleeces and added some British Alpaca to make up the weight so that I could send the fibres to a local spinning mill. The resultant yarn was then woven for me at a local woollen mill. It is this special fabric that I use for these throws.

Square Throws

These have been dyed using my signature colour-ways and can be used either as a throw or a warm shawl. The dyeing process has raised the ‘nap’, giving these throws a fluffy appearance.

Throws

Here I have enhanced the natural white lambswool/alpaca mix by embroidering geometric patterns using silk ribbon dyed using my colour-ways. The inspiration for my designs came from two very diverse sources. The blocks from the work of the well known Scottish artist/designer Charles Rennie Macintosh and the triangles from the rug designs used by the Navajo Indians of North America.
